Electrical Safety

Electrical safety checks are a sensible precaution generally, and an absolute must in environments where electrical equipment has a tough life. Gigging bands punish such kit fairly mercilessly, so an annual check is the minimum. As a comparison, building site gear can be as often as 3-monthly.

This refers to safety checks performed by a qualified operator. On top of this, every user of every single piece of electrical kit, (you and your amp, your mum and her iron) should know how to visually check for damage, like cracked casings, worn/frayed/cut cables, sloppily wired plugs, etc. The idea is never to assume that something is OK just because it was last time you used it. Look at it!

Extension Leads
Please please remember to regularly check all your extension leads! They are endlessly useful in band situations and of course, in many other ways, but are LETHAL if not properly used  and maintained.

Never daisy-chain extension leads  if you can possibly avoid it. This increases the resistance to ground significantly every time you add a lead, and can leave you essentially un-grounded.

Mains plugs
If you’ve any wired plugs, as opposed to moulded ones, these also need careful checking reasonably frequently, in between annual PAT tests.
